A Legend Leaves Chelsea FC – Sophie Ingle’s Farewell
Sometimes the word legend fits just right. Today, Chelsea FC officially announced that Sophie Ingle will leave the club at the end of the season. With 214 appearances, 12 goals, and no fewer than 11 trophies, Ingle is undeniably one of the most important figures in the club’s modern history.
The Welsh midfielder returned to Chelsea in 2018 and quickly became a rock in Emma Hayes’ squad. Whether playing as a deep-lying midfielder or a central defender, her composure, tactical intelligence, and leadership were always evident. Her presence on the pitch often brought a sense of calm that only the very best players can instill.
Ingle's career highlights at Chelsea include five WSL titles, three FA Cups, two Continental League Cups, and the FA Community Shield. She also scored one of the most beautiful goals ever seen in the Women's Super League — a long-range rocket against Arsenal in 2020, which earned her a nomination for the FIFA Puskás Award.
Unfortunately, her 2024–2025 season was disrupted by a serious ACL injury picked up in a friendly against Feyenoord last September. Despite that setback, her impact was never forgotten. Sophie remained part of the group, still very much a leader, still very much Chelsea.
I once had the honour of photographing Sophie during a match — that moment is now part of my personal archive, but also part of a larger story: the story of a player who gave everything for her club, who represented Wales with immense pride, and who will remain a reference point in women’s football.
Thank you, Sophie. Monument. Leader. Legend.
